These are tungsten-based materials with most falling under the Mallory 3000 grading. These allow generally have 90% tungsten inside along with some iron as well. These could be used in radiation uses as well as in the medical equipment processing world.
Road milling bits are used all over the construction and asphalt world to help rip up old roads. These bits have a small nub of carbide on the ends to help go through the asphalt quickly and safely. These nubs will eventually wear from usage and instead of throwing them in with your steel scrap, you can sell them for a higher price. These will be bought at a minimum of (1) 55-gallon drum at a time and are bought at a price per pound, not at a material recovery. These are also used in the drilling and mining industries and most bits are not reused, but generally are always recycled.
Many machining presses and industries use filters to catch carbide or tungsten powders and particulates from going into the air. These filters will have a residual value and will be paid out after they are processed. If you are looking for pricing on these filters you will be able to learn about the formulas- but all final pricing is based on material recovery.
Anytime that carbide is mixed together with HSS you will have a much lower price. While drill bits all can look similar, once they are mixed together they would have to get sorted and separated piece by piece. This creates a lot of extra work and will lower the value of the carbide pieces. High-speed steel has multiple types as well and if they are unsorted then the lowest price will be used.
Carbide or tungsten-based swarf generally will have a very low yielding amount of tungsten inside of it. These swarf materials could come from different grades of tungsten alloys or have other metals mixed in. The pricing on these materials will also be based on your refined value and not the estimate from using an XRF on the materials.
The different metal recoveries from sludges or powders vary on the application and the dryness of the materials. Many times these sludges or powders are produced from different filtration processes and should be shipped in a careful way. These items should be properly secured as well as stored in a leak-proof container for shipping. These items will be paid out based on the metal recovery (especially for sludge). Generally made up of 50-70% tungsten and 5-20% cobalt materials, these have to be drained and analyzed for pricing.
These tungsten carbide tips are used in larger manufacturing or tool cutting processes. These bits will be longer and thicker than many other more used bits, and because of their size, the scrap value is lessened. These bits have to go through a multi-step process for recycling, thus lowering the value.
